Lancaster Catholic, York Catholic Set for Battle of Unbeaten Teams

Two undefeated teams will meet Friday night in York as the Lancaster Catholic Crusaders travel to take on the York Catholic Fighting Irish in a highly anticipated non-conference matchup.

Both teams have opened the 2026 season with impressive 2-0 starts, setting the stage for a matchup between two of the area's hottest teams. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. September 11th at York Catholic High School.

Lancaster Catholic has wasted little time making its presence known this season. The Crusaders opened the year with a 42-13 road victory over Camp Hill before returning home last Friday and rolling past Newport, 52-7. Through two games, Lancaster Catholic has outscored its opponents 94-20.

Head coach Chris Maiorino's squad has shown the ability to put points on the board while also limiting opposing offenses. The Crusaders will now face a York Catholic defense that has been tested early and a Fighting Irish offense that has produced 85 points through its first two games.

Lancaster Catholic has playmakers on both sides of the ball. Senior Chris Baumler (RB/LB), Senior Braylen Johnson (WR/OLB), Senior Brandon Rudolph (TE/DE), and Senior Roman Clemson (OLB).

York Catholic has been just as impressive to begin the season.

The Fighting Irish opened the year with a 36-7 win at Susquenita before defeating Camp Hill 49-12 last Friday. York Catholic's two victories have given the team an 85-19 scoring advantage heading into Friday night's matchup.

York Catholic brings back its entire offensive and defensive units from last season, giving head coach Brad Hayek a group with plenty of experience. Among the returning offensive starters are quarterback Michael Staub, running back Sean Melhorn, running back Camden Fitze and receivers Callahan Murphy, Alex Kipple and Maddox Gans. Melhorn has been one of the Fighting Irish's biggest offensive threats early in the season, averaging 87.5 rushing yards per game.

One of the biggest storylines Friday will be the defensive battle on both sides. Can Lancaster Catholic slow down a York Catholic offense that returns its entire starting unit from a year ago, or will York Catholic’s experienced defensive control Lancaster Catholic's offense and create pressure up front? That will be a key factor to watch in this game.

Friday night's matchup gives both teams an early opportunity to make a statement. Lancaster Catholic has dominated its first two opponents, while York Catholic has done the same. With both teams sitting at 2-0 and combining for 179 points through two games, there is plenty of reason to expect an exciting matchup under the lights in York.

For York Catholic, a win would provide another impressive non-conference victory before the Fighting Irish begin York-Adams Division 3 play the following week at Littlestown. Lancaster Catholic, meanwhile, will look to remain unbeaten before opening Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 5 play at Annville-Cleona on September 18.
